GLEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. Seminars of several days offer space for mutual and peer-to-peer learning and experience exchange. The European tandems foster this change of perspective by a three-month internship in the Global South. The GLEN cycle focuses on methods and contents of Global Learning which can be acquired and tested during the seminars and put into practice after the internship phase by organising an action or other initiatives linked to global issues.
Are you passionate about environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture? If so, this project might suit you. To participate you should have a background in agroforestry or experience in vegetable gardening and farming. Alternatively, you hold a degree in engineering with practical knowledge of how to construct irrigation systems. In addition, you should be confident delivering workshops and teaching people how to use personal computers and possess very good English language skills.
The Sustainable Living Foundation (SULIFO) is a non-governmental organisation that focuses on environmental conservation and food security by training community members in sustainable agricultural practices and systems. In addition, SULIFO raises awareness about basic health and hygiene practices and provides care and support to the elderly and people affected by HIV/AIDS. SULIFO also supports income-generating activities and strives to promote tourism. Currently, the organisation’s work is supported by 3-4 volunteers, as well as community members. The SULIFO is based in the village Lukindu, a rural community in the Lwengo District of southern Uganda. The SULIFO’s projects involve locals in sustainable farming activities, such as planting fruit trees to mitigate climate change and foster food security. To implement its projects, the SULIFO cooperates with COTFONE and Slow Food Uganda.
As a GLEN participant, you would actively support SULIFO’s team by planting various tree species and preparing tree nursery beds. In addition, you would assist in making manure, planting food crops and vegetables in an agroforestry system, and engage in weeding. By organising workshops for community members on recycling and kitchen composting you would support the SULIFO’s waste management project. Constructing a rainwater collection and/or simple irrigation system is also a task GLEN participants will complete. ICT support and support of SULIFO’s fundraising activities would be highly appreciated.
The scheduled time for the internship is three months between July and October 2018 and will be arranged in consultation with the host organisation.
Training and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.
The GLEN team will be comprised of one Czech participant and one German participant.
