GLEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. Seminars of several days offer space for mutual and peer-to-peer learning and experience exchange. The European tandems foster this change of perspective by a three-month internship in the Global South. The GLEN cycle focuses on methods and contents of Global Learning which can be acquired and tested during the seminars and put into practice after the internship phase by organising an action or other initiatives linked to global issues.
Please note that this internship is part of the GLEN Anglo seminar group with English being the working language.
In this internship you will work on environmental conservation and agriculture. If you have prior knowledge in sustainable agriculture practices and climate change interventions this project could be a fit. Your tasks will be fairly hands-on and you will work in tree nurseries, gardens and fields.
The Sustainable Living Foundation (SULIFO) is a community based organization located in Lukindu, South Western Uganda. It is a small organization with four permanent staff members. SULIFO is committed to the topics of environmental conservation and climate change. Communities in the area are negatively impacted by the insufficient rainfalls. SULIFO’s focus lays on training communities in sustainable agricultural systems and practices. The organization also runs an agriculture training centre. Furthermore, it promotes income-generating activities. SULIFO works closely with local governance structures and other related non-governmental organizations.
Your tasks are related to environmental conservation. You will engage in tree nursery activities: you plant different tree species, prepare tree nursery beds, pot trees and create tree nursery shades. You will also exchange knowledge with the organization and get active in agriculture related topics. You will set up composite manure pits. SULIFO intends to put this manure to different gardens where fruits and vegetables will be grown. The plants also need to be taken care of. Your creativity will be appreciated in developing and creating irrigation systems. In one community garden, SULIFO additionally runs a collaboration with Slow Food Uganda in order to promote local and indigenous food varieties. Throughout your internship, you will work with a local intern.
The scheduled time period for the internship is three months between July and September 2017.
Trainings and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.
