Empowering youth and internally displaced persons

GLEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. Seminars of several days offer space for mutual and peer-to-peer learning and experience exchange. The European tandems foster this change of perspective by a three-month internship in the Global South. The GLEN cycle focuses on methods and contents of Global Learning which can be acquired and tested during the seminars and put into practice after the internship phase by organising an action or other initiatives linked to global issues.

Do you enjoy working with children and young people? Would you like to contribute to the social integration of internally displaced persons (IDPs)? In this project, you would support the delivery of vocational training for youth and IDPs. To participate you should have a solid background in mobilising youth and working with children. Beyond this, you should have practical knowledge of community event planning in the context of non-governmental organisations. If you are also a team player with good presentation skills who easily adapts to new environments, this project is a great fit. Very good English and Russian language skills are also essential for participation.

The Koda Community Education Centre (Koda CEC) is a non-profit organisation implementing vocational and personal development programmes to support municipality development and the social integration of less privileged children, youth, and internally displaced people (IDPs). Koda CEC is based in the village Koda in the Kvemo Kartli region of Georgia, about 25km south of the capital Tbilisi. Following the conflict over the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, a large number of Georgians were displaced. As a result, approximately 3000 IDPs live today in settlements in Koda. By offering English and computer classes, business management workshops, and training in sewing or furniture making, Koda CEC strives to strengthen civil participation in the community and to promote multiculturalism. The organisation was founded in 2010 and currently has six fulltime staff members and 10 trainers supporting its work.

As a GLEN participant you would work with the Koda Youth Club and support the delivery of children development classes. In collaboration with Koda CEC staff, you would plan and implement various community activities and events, in particular for children and youth. In addition, you would actively participate in the organisation of annual festivals and assist in the centre’s daily administrative work. GLEN participants are encouraged to introduce new ideas and initiate projects focusing on children and civil engagement of youth.

The scheduled time for the internship is between September and December 2018.
