Promoting recycling to empower young women >

LEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. Seminars of several days offer space for mutual and peer-to-peer learning and experience exchange. The European tandems foster this change of perspective by a three-month internship in the Global South. The GLEN cycle focuses on methods and contents of Global Learning which can be acquired and tested during the seminars and put into practice after the internship phase by organising an action or other initiatives linked to global issues.

Are you passionate about gender equality? Do you care about environmental protection? Then you should check out this project description. We are looking for two participants who enjoy working with youth, are creative and talented in making handicrafts. Alternatively, you have a background in business, particularly in marketing. Very good English language skills are also essential.

The Girl Power Foundation (GPFO) is a non-governmental organisation working to empower underprivileged girls and young women and increase their social protection. The GPFO is based in the town of Masaka in the central region of southern Uganda. With three staff members, GPFO provides psychological, social, moral, and economic support to vulnerable adolescent girls affected by poverty and diseases like HIV/AIDS. To contribute to the improvement of the well being, of young mothers in particular, the GPFO provides support for vocational, technical, and higher education. The organisation collaborates with local partners, such as RERSSI, COTFONE, and Slow Food Uganda. One of the GPFO’s projects seeks to recycle used truck tyres into sandals. The project aims to promote creative recycling methods among young people and to provide them with access to financial resources.

As a GLEN participant, you would support the GPFO in promoting sustainable waste management and creative recycling methods among young females. You would assist in engaging girls and young women in converting organic waste into composite manure and in creating irrigation systems out of PET plastic bottles. Moreover, working the young women, you would assist GPFO in producing sandals made out of used truck tyres. Coming up with new designs and developing business and marketing plans for selling the sandals would also be tasks performed by GLEN participants.

The scheduled time for the internship is three months between 1 July 2018 and 30 September 2018.

Training and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.

The GLEN tandem will be comprised of one Czech participant and one German participant.
