5. září 2021 - 19. září 2021 (15 dnů)
The workcamp is organized by the NGO Benediktus which is a community of people with and without mental disabilities who live a daily life in a mutual community. Benediktus provides social services, a day care center, social therapy workshops and sheltered housing, in order to involve people with disabilities in everyday life. In the workshops, clients acquire work habits and skills. We create sheltered jobs for people with altered working ability, especially for people with disabilities. Benediktus has been a member of the L'Arche International Federation of Communities since 2018. The aim of this workcamp is to form a connection between people from different cultures and industries who, together with people with mental disabilities, get involved in a work aimed at further revitalizing the locality and relationships in the local community. In this workcamp, you are actively working for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Reduced Inequalities (UN SDG10).
The Benediktus community is located in the picturesque village Modletin, between the villages of Horni Bradlo and Rusinov, in the heart of the Iron Mountains. The area consists of historically significant buildings, which Benediktus reconstructs and uses for activities such as housing, work and cultural activities. The complex has a timbered fruit dryer, orchard and vegetable garden. Leisure time: As Modletín is located in the heart of the protected landscape area of the Iron Mountain, the immediate vicinity offers a wide range of activities: hiking, swimming in a nearby dam, mushroom picking, sightseeing in the area (castles, chateaux, historic villages, geomorphological formations, natural monuments), cultural events (concerts, exhibitions, openings). In the area of Benedikt, it is possible to engage in sports activities. Meeting point: Modletin. The meeting time is usually in the afternoon. Please note it takes approximately 3 hours to get there from Prague. The exact info will be provided in the infosheet.
Work will be mainly manual and will include grouting, painting a timber dried fruit dryer, painting of rooms and wooden structures (pergola, benches, tables), paving a brick sidewalk, treatment of slopes in the garden, planting herbs and trees, compost repair, planting bushes, preparing wood for the winter, cleaning of the premises, herb processing, production of jams and compotes. None of the work will be too physically demanding. It will be possible for volunteers, if interested and by prior arrangement, to take part in activities related to the care of people with disabilities, especially escorts and leisure activities, always with the support of a social worker. The work will take place in the area of the village of Modletín, especially outside, so please bring rain boots and a raincoat. Please bring clothes that can get dirty or damaged. Study part: Volunteers will have the opportunity to meet the local community in the form of a snack & bite happening: the neighbors will bring their own food and taste what the volunteers have prepared. Of course, the organization will be introduced to volunteers, including a concert by the band BeneBend. During the excursion of the workshops, the volunteers will get acquainted with the traditional crafts that Benediktus operates: fruit drying, work with wood and ceramics, production of decorative wreaths, processing of natural products.
Accommodation for volunteers is located in the Benedikt complex in the village of Modletin in the building of the former spa: http://benediktus.org/en/modletin/spa-aperat.html. It is a large room in the attic with a shower, two toilets and a kitchen. However, there are also a 3 more toilets and 2 showers in the adjacent building. You will sleep on covered mattresses, but you need to bring your own sleeping bag. Food will be provided by Benediktus (we cook together with our clients). By prior arrangement, volunteers can cook for themselves in the kitchenette located on the premises. We welcome if volunteers want to participate in the preparation of Czech dishes or cook dishes from their countries. Ingredients and space will be provided to them.
