Project profile
Ganja La Simba Primary School is a school offering primary education in the Kenyan education system. The school has a population of over one hundred children draw from the local community and a total of two teachers who have the responsibility of ensuring that the children are education and to install discipline in them.
The school was started as an initiative from the local community members to promote the level of education among the children from this community since they were lagging behind in education and that the available schools were far away for the young children to walk to school daily. Hence the community members contributed in the construction of the first classrooms. At the moment the school has three classrooms and the fourth one is in the process of construction.
The coast region is a vast tourist area and this economic activity has had a negative impact on the people of this village.
Project activities:
During the period of placement the volunteers will be involved in accomplishing the following activities that are aimed at supporting the growth and sustainability of the school:
• Teaching
• Construction of classrooms
• Tree planting and environmental activities
• Capacity building with the community youths and focus groups
• Awareness on emerging issues
Theme: Enhancement of the girl child education
Education is a key factor in the development of any community and the people in it. The socio-economic situation of people living along the coastal line of Kenya has had a negative impact on the young people that at time has lead to an increased school drop outs especially for the girl child. Early marriages and some cultural practices have also hindered the process of girl child education hence need for awareness and information sharing with the people from the community.
Volunteer will have a chance to share with the community members concerning how well the girl child can be given an opportunity to access education and the benefits that the community stands to gain in this process.
Volunteers will have the opportunity for excursions:
• There are possibilities for group excursion during the work camp and especially over the weekends and these will be done at an extra cost borne by the volunteer.
• Such excursions should be organized in consultation with the community leaders and the KVDA project facilitators will play a key role.
• It should also be noted that majority of Kenyan volunteers are either students or youths out of school and may not have money for such excursions and volunteers from other nations have no obligation to pay for those who do not have money. This issue should be handled with care so as to avoid possible conflict that would be injurious to harmonious relations among volunteers.
• National Heritage: Kenya is a home of the 8 wonders of the world synonymous with the unique phenomenon that happens once a year with the migration of the wild beast from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania through the Mara River in to Massai Mara from July to September.
• Volunteer will have several options in the community where they will be able to learn more about the community.
KVDA RESIDENCE ACCOMMODATION:
The volunteers will be accommodated at the Ganja La Simba Primary School in classrooms during the project.
MEALS:
• Volunteers will prepare their own meals.
• Most of the foodstuffs are Kenyan
• KVDA will provide the meals
WORK CAMP ACTIVITY COST:
Airport Transfers - Two ways transfer to and from Airport - Euro 30.00
Participation fee - Meals at the project + KVDA administrative expenses - Euro 200.00
Project activity support - To cater for some of the materials that will be used during the project placement - Euro 50.00
Orientation - Caters for one-day orientation on 27th August 2011 for full board (accommodation and meals) plus slums tour - Euro 30.00
Transport - Fare to and from the work camp - Euro 40.00
